Shortly after election season we told you that Larry the Cat – mouser of 10 Downing Street – was potentially more popular than either prime ministerial candidate. But as of this month? He may have some competition.

Because – despite some serious lobbying from his son, daughter and the dog – Prime Minister Keir Starmer will be getting a kitten.

He told BBC pundit Matt Chorley: “It’s been a long summer of negotiations – back and forth, different options. But we are now getting a kitten instead of a dog.”

Despite early pressure in favour of a German shepherd, the Starmers are expected to welcome a Siberian kitten into their home.

Native to the harsh climates of Siberia, this GCCF-recognised breed was born to thrive in the snow covered tundra. And they look it – with a fluffy coat consisting of a water-resistant top layer and a dense undercoat.

But suited as they may be to Siberia, the Siberian breed is equally suited to sofa. Because their playful and affectionate natures make them excellent companions. For prime ministers included.

The new kitten – whose name is yet to be announced – will be sharing stomping grounds with Larry. The iconic mouser of 10 Downing Street, who’s held the prestigious role of Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office since 2011, and the Starmer family’s rescue cat, JoJo.

Sarah Elliot, the central veterinary officer for Cats Protection, told the press: “As the junior member of the growing at coalition at Downing Street, the prime minister and his family will need to take plenty of time to slowly introduce the new addition to JoJo and Larry.”

She continued: “Young kittens can be quite exhausting for older statesmen like Larry, so he’ll also need a safe, quiet area to retreat to when the energy of a young member of the team gets a bit too much.”
